Migraine is a neurological condition that goes far beyond a typical headache: throbbing pain (often on one side), nausea, sensitivity to light and noise, sometimes visual auras. In Germany, around 8 million people suffer from migraines – and most are looking for alternatives to medications that lose their effectiveness over time.
Migraine vs. Tension Headache: The Difference

Tension headaches are dull, bilateral, and triggered by muscle tension. Migraines are throbbing, often unilateral, worsened by movement, and frequently accompanied by other symptoms. They are caused by overactivity in the brain, which triggers vasodilation and inflammatory responses.
What do studies say about acupressure for migraines?
The evidence is promising: A study from the journal "Cephalalgia" showed that pressure on the Hegu point (Large Intestine 4 – the skin fold between the thumb and forefinger) could significantly reduce pain intensity during migraine attacks. Other studies suggest that regular acupressure treatments can reduce the frequency of attacks over time.
The most important pressure points for migraines
- Hegu (LI 4): Skin fold between thumb and index finger – press firmly for 30–60 seconds. Do not use during pregnancy!
- Taiyang: Temple area – gently massage in circles, helps with pressure behind the eyes.
- Fengchi (GB 20): Base of the neck on both sides of the spine – deep thumb pressure, helps with migraines due to neck tension.
- Yintang: Point between the eyebrows (center of the forehead) – gentle, circular pressure; relaxes the forehead muscles.
Acupressure mat in migraine prevention
During an acute migraine attack, the acupressure mat is often too intense. However, as a preventive method – used between attacks – it could be helpful: It reduces chronic stress, improves sleep, and lowers cortisol levels. All three factors are known migraine triggers.
When to see a doctor?
Migraines should be medically evaluated, especially if attacks are frequent, change, or are accompanied by neurological symptoms. Acupressure can be a complementary, side-effect-free method – not a substitute for medical treatment.
