Prevention Courses: What does the health insurance cover according to §20 SGB V?

Did you know that your health insurance partially covers relaxation and prevention courses? According to §20 SGB V, statutory health insurance companies are obliged to promote courses in the areas of exercise, nutrition, stress reduction, and addiction prevention. Far too few people in Germany take advantage of this – even though reimbursements can be substantial.

What is covered?

Courses in four areas of action are eligible for funding:

• Exercise: Gym, back school, Pilates, yoga
• Stress reduction and relaxation: Autogenic training, Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR), mindfulness courses
• Nutrition: Nutrition courses, weight management
• Addiction prevention: Smoking cessation, alcohol reduction

How high is the reimbursement?

Most statutory health insurance companies reimburse between 75–8 and 100% of the course costs, but up to a fixed amount per course. Typically, this is €75–150 per course, and even more with some insurance companies. Many companies support up to two courses per calendar year.

Important: The exact amount and number of subsidized courses differ depending on the health insurance provider. Please check the current conditions directly with your insurance company.

What requirements must be met?

1. Certified course provider: The course must be certified by a recognized body (e.g., ZPP – Central Agency for Prevention).
2. Course format: Usually, 8–12 units are required, to be completed within a specific period.
3. Attendance: You must participate regularly (at least 80% of the units).
4. Application before or after the course: Depending on the insurance company, obtain pre-approval or submit a certificate of participation.
